A star of the fashion world in the early twentieth century, Mariano Fortuny (1871-1949) rose to fame overnight with his light-weight and soft Delphos gown (a finely pleated silk dress). This exhibition is the result of extensive collaboration with the Palazzo Fortuny in Venice, an art museum housed in Fortuny’s former home and atelier. We have built the show around the silk dresses, coats, and other fashion creations that demonstrate the true value of Fortuny’s art. We also present a comprehensive overview of his artistic career, from paintings and prints to photographs and stage-related works, as well as his design-related materials, which include his collection of Japanese katagami stencils for dyeing fabrics.
Born in Granada, Spain, Fortuny was raised in Rome and Paris before achieving success with his creations in Venice. Covering his career from the early years to the wide-ranging creative activities of later life, the exhibition paints a complete picture of a multi-talented artist and designer who has attracted worldwide attention in recent years.
